Idea of progress

INTRODUCTION

Today I am going to deal with the Idea of Progress. First, I would like to give a definition of what we call ‘progress’: “Progress is a steady evolution towards a better state”. The idea of progress is linked to great changes in society. In relation to the notion, the theme of my presentation will be the evolution of shopping habits. Over the past few years, the modes of consumption have greatly evolved. And I think that the development of the internet has changed our ways of shopping. We live in a “Consumer Society” where people think that we can buy happiness.

Some people protest against materialism and organise campaigns against consumerism. They want to react against the addiction to shopping. The Freegans are a well-known group who live on waste in our society and on Fair trade products.

Problématique:

j’introduis ma problématique.

It is interesting to ask ourselves whether we can create happiness by shopping more or whether our consumer society has already gone too far?

  3. Then, I will look at the text by Sophie Kinsella entitled Confessions of a shopaholic. The book has been so successful, it has been made into a film.

  4. And finally we will discuss the advert for the adaptation on screen of Sophie Kinsella novel.

CONCLUSION:

In my opinion, it is very difficult to escape consumerism because we live in a society governed by money. Unfortunately, money doesn’t bring happiness. The Freegan movement has understood this and is protesting against our wasteful society.
However, I believe that we should behave as responsible citizens and look after our planet: we should not waste food. We should not become shopaholics like the character in Sophie Kinsella’s novel.

Spaces and exchanges

INTRODUCTION

Today I am going to talk about the concept of Spaces and Exchanges which is essential to understand the phenomenon of immigration.

We live in an ever changing world where people move from one country to another to improve their lives and to experience other cultures.

Problématique: j’introduis ma problématique.
It has become highly important to consider how we can adapt to a world in permanent evolution, how we can make the best of our multicultural societies.

In order to answer this question, I will look at 4 documents.

  1. First of all, I will analyse two texts: one written by Thomas Boyle entitled The Tortilla Curtain written in 1995.réussir l'oral de bac anglais surt spaces and exchanges
  2. Then, I will study “Why the caged bird sings?” by Alan Zarembo. Here you have a summary of the story
  3. Thirdly, I have chosen a painting by Bernard Canavan showing Irish immigration. Irish immigration Bernard Canavan
  4. And finally I will use a cartoon by Christo Komarnitski representing the immigration from Bulgaria and Romania into the UK.

CONCLUSION:

In a nutshell, we can say that we live in a moving world, in a world of globalization where people and goods travel from country to country on an everyday basis. It is most interesting to understand these movements and especially to work out what motivates people to leave their country. Throughout the ages people have followed their dreams like the American dream to escape difficult conditions and improve their lives and try to achieve happiness.

Myth & Heroes

INTRODUCTION

I am about to deal with the notion of « Myths and Heroes » which is a complicated one. Indeed, the definition of a myth can vary a lot. It is usually a traditional and typical story or it can be a legend, an invention, an illusion or even a utopia. Therefore ‘Myths’ are associated with ‘Heroes’ who can be legendary characters or real men and women.

Today, I am not going to comment on superheroes who have special powers to save humanity from Evil but on contrary I am going to analyse three documents introducing us to real men and women heroes.

Problématique :

j’introduis ma problématique.

How did ordinary people, following their dreams managed to change society? How did they have an influence worldwide for some of them? And how did they become our heroes? Do “true heroes” exist nowadays?

  1. To start off with, I will consider a poem by John Dos Passos entitled “Prince of Peace”

  2. Then,  I will examine an extract from the Memoirs of Legendary Ace by Robin Olds.

  3. And finally, I will underline the influence of Oprah Winfrey nowadays thanks to an article taken from the Internet. Here you have a video on Oprah Winfrey's biography:

CONCLUSION :

Myths and Heroes represent dreams and hopes for all of us. Each society has its Myths and Heroes. They create a collective identity and role models are admired and influence our values. They keep the mythical and the fantastic alive and they are, according to me, the remaining part of childhood we all have inside us and a true illusion at the same time. Myths and Heroes serve an important purpose in our society: they allow us to dream and they inspire us. We dream of having the lives of our heroes but in the end we have to face reality and we owe it to ourselves to do the best we can to make our dreams come true. Do our Heroes make us better people? Do they help us to create our dreams?

Places and forms of power

INTRODUCTION :

Définition de la notion :

Ici je présente la notion Places and Forms of Power en me focalisant sur l’Afrique du Sud

Today, I am going to talk about Places and Forms of Power. The notion of ‘power’ generally implies a basic division between those who have and exercise power and those who have none or very little.

Clearly, South Africa comes to mind as it is a very good illustration of this point. The distribution of power in society is a very difficult balance to achieve. The Apartheid which separated black people from white people displayed all the characteristics of a society where the power held by the Afrikaans became synonym of inequality.

Problématique :

j’introduis ma problématique.

I wonder if Man is able to use power in order to create democracy and equality of rights for all. Can power exist without corruption? The example of South Africa is relevant to shows struggles between different types of powers and also to illustrate the abuse of power.

  1. The first aspect I will consider focuses on the Apartheid and its consequences for the South African population. I have chosen 2 documents to illustrate this period in the history of South Africa:
Réussir anglais oral bac, places and forms of power
An anti-apartheid poster designed by David King in 1978.

  2. Then, I will concentrate on Nelson Mandela, a key character in South Africa. Commenting on an extract from the book written by Barack Obama entitled “Conversations with myself”.
    8b645f05e164ef4a788046165478af98dfb6e1d2
  3. Finally, I will discuss a text published by the Michigan State University on building Democracy after Apartheid. It will allow me to underline the influence Mandela has had not only in South Africa with the Rainbow Nation, but also in the world and I will talk about his legacy.

CONCLUSION :

To conclude, these examples have demonstrated the complexity of the notion of Places and forms of Power.  Power has always existed since the beginning of humanity and if it is misused, it can lead to inequality between people and even worst to the exploitation of a group of people by another like we saw in South Africa. To my mind, it underlines the importance of having the right to vote and of voting for the right government.
