Dear Charlie,
I hope you are well. Life is strange here for us in Shaker Heights.
The houses are very different to what you imagine from outside: every house is designed to hold two families but from the street you can see only one door. Mia and I had to learn a new way of life because there are a lot of rules to follow in this place. For instance, we mustn’t forget to write the little word “up” in our address so that the mail gets to our flat on the first floor.
Even the language is different: the tree lawn gets its name from one single Norway maple that was planted on it. Another peculiar custom is the way garbage is collected. We must not bring it to the front of the house for Friday collection but we have to leave it at the rear of the house where a man wearing an orange work suit will collect it on a scooter and drive it to the large truck parked on the street. You can imagine Mia’s surprise seeing the scooter go past the kitchen window on the first Friday we were here!
Our garage is also hidden at the back of the house as not to affect the view from the street. On rainy days, we have got used to carrying an umbrella as it is a fair way from the front door. We discover new rules every day and we only found out this week that if the lawn is over six inches high and remains uncut, the city comes to mow it and charges you for it!
As you can see, it is a whole new way of life but you get used to it and the streets here look immaculate. I hope you can visit us one day.
Hope to see you soon.
Lovexx Pearl.
